A native of Northern California, Trent Nelson is currently Chief Photographer at The Salt Lake Tribune. He has covered three Olympics, a pair of NBA Finals, and the Final Four for the Tribune, and since 2005 has traveled throughout North America covering polygamy. Assignments for the Tribune have taken him across the United States, Africa, Europe and Central America.

His work has won a number of awards including three Utah News Photographer of the Year titles as well as the Worst Photo of the Year Award from the Utah News Photographers Association.

His 2003 composite photograph of Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton was published over six pages in Sports Illustrated, the largest photograph in the history of the magazine.
In 1985 Trent was a founding member of the Bay Area hardcore punk band Rabid Lassie and self-published zines from 1985-1996.
