Utah vs. Georgia Gymnastics - Bar Breakdown
January 15, 2008

These photos will take you through shooting a routine on the bars, in chronological order. There are a number of good angles for shooting the bars, though not one angle that’s great for every move. Some moves face one way, some the other. As you’ll see, the action shots from the side angle I chose for this routine weren’t the best. But I was in the perfect position for the reaction at the end, so all is okay. Oh yeah, this is Kristina Baskett’s 9.9 routine.

As I said in the last post, I started zooming in for this moment (above) in the routines. Too bad it’s a little soft. And I’m really in the wrong spot for this move:

Now I’m not only in the wrong spot for this particular moment, but the focus went wacko. Hey, it’s a warts-and-all post. Appreciate the candor.

And now the dismount:

She knew it was going to be a high score, and look at the killer reaction. This is where my position pays off big time.

I’d rather have this reaction (below) from the angle I’m in, with the fans in the background, than an action shot that I’ll get at the next meet. Even her ponytail is excited!

Now if I’m smart, I’ll study these photos and be in a better position for action shots of Kristina’s routine next time.

Got something to say?

Dude in the background with the white shirt and his arms up is money. Nice accent to a good pic.
