Hot & Dry

August 5, 2007

The editor says: “The story is that Utah is facing a hot and dry future. We need a photo that says hot and dry. Now scram!” (exaggeration mine)

Going out to get a photo of hot and dry means that I have to get hot and dry. Sadly, the world doesn’t exists where you can do great or even average photojournalism out the window of an air-conditioned car.

I headed out to the Great Salt Lake, figuring I’d find something that looked hot and dry, and hopefully someone would be crazy enough to be out there doing something in the heat. It was a desolate environment, with the sun pounding down on a bug-infested expanse of smelly mud.

Against all odds, I spotted a guy walking his dogs. I moved far off with a long lens and lined up a shot that the guy was walking towards, hoping to emphasize the heat waves that were pouring off the desert floor. In the few seconds I had before he got there, I realized I was going to have to go prone in the mud for the shot to work.

The guy’s name was John Knox. He told me he walks his two dogs Bear (white) and Coda along the hot, salty lakeshore because, “These guys aren’t dog friendly, so I take them out in the middle of nowhere.”

Hot and dry. No doubt. Also smelly and muddy. I sent the shot in from my car, then drove home and stepped into a cold shower with all of my smelly, muddy clothes still on.
