Hard to Believe

New Zealand’s Parliament is looking to restrict the access of news photographers to what should be the most open of public places: the House of Parliament. It’s a very interesting story, with lawmakers embarrassed by photographs of their ridiculous behavior (napping, flipping each other off). Rather than behave, the lawmakers have decided to propose limits on how photographers can portray them. This is a story so preposterous I would expect to read it in The Onion.

Here’s a clip from an article on Stuff:

The claim about disturbance from photographers was ludicrous, said Pankhurst, who is also editor of The Dominion Post.

“At the same time members below in the House are often hugely disruptive, shouting at each other and even giving the fingers on occasions. We’ll issue our photographers with slippers and have them sit in one place if that would help.”

“If MPs, who are our employees, are so concerned about their image, they should behave better.”

The full article is here, and it’s worth going to just to see the photo of “Ron Mark giving the finger”: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4107805a6160.html

And thanks to the blog at PDN EDU, where I first read about it. http://pdnedu.blogs.com/pdnedu/2007/07/shooting-the-me.html
