Girls Basketball Tournament

March 1, 2007

After the emotional week of the Trolley Square shooting, I found myself refreshingly immersed in the High School Girls State Basketball Championships. Nothing clears your mind like sitting through four basketball games in a row, editing through hundreds of photographs at every break. It is pure madness. I’m not a sports fan, but this is one of my favorite assignments.

After sitting through nearly 14 games in four days I realized two important facts:

1. The Ozzy Osbourne song “Crazy Train” was never meant to be played by a high school marching band.

2. The team who scores the first basket has a 50 percent chance of winning.

The highlight of the week was watching Skyline High School’s Liz Johnson make a last-second shot against Davis to send her team to the championship game. The photo above is the celebration that followed.
