Why Bother?

March 7, 2006

Covering the 5A boys basketball tournament Wednesday, I was loaded down with equipment. Two cameras at hand (one for downcourt, one for close action), and I wired a remote camera that I clamped to the basketball standard to give me a wide view of the action around the hoop. It was a lot of work.

A photographer from another newspaper asked me the question, “Why bother?” Working so hard, shooting hundreds of photos and, “they’re only going to use one photo anyway.” He was holding a single camera, and in a way I envied the fact he wasn’t carrying fifty pounds of gear.

Thinking about it the next morning, staring at the small photographs from the game that were published in the printed edition (he was right, one from each game), I came upon my answer:

No matter how many photographs are going to run, my name is under them. So I’m going to use every available tool and make every effort to go after the best photographs that I can get.
And the ones that aren’t published in the paper will show up on the website.

In fact, we’ve just started a new venue for just such circumstances. The Salt Lake Tribune photographers are now posting a photoblog, “What We’ve Seen,” of their favorite work. You can find that photoblog here.

Still thinking, “Why bother?” Well, I guess you can phone it in no matter your profession. Have fun with that.
